Today’s guest post comes from Sandy Hammer. I’ve invited her to share her thoughts on the impact of technology in our industry. With over 20 years of experience in the international events industry, Sandy is the co-founder and CMO of AllSeated, a collaborative network for planning events that offers tools including floorplans, 3D view, Guest List, RSVP, Seating, Timelines, Mobile Check-In and more.

The pace of the Era of Digital Transformation is faster than most of us ever anticipated. Huge shifts, like the application of Virtual Reality, are taking place and simply keeping up isn’t enough anymore. In fact, most of the wedding industry doesn’t have the necessary skill to be early adopters of the newest tech trends, let alone stay ahead of them.

Adopting tech solutions to common business challenges could give you a huge advantage over competitors and help you grab a larger market share while meeting the evolving needs of your clients. But how do you stay ahead of something that is developing at such a lightning pace?

Read to Stay Current

First, self-educate. Read biographies of tech leaders to help understand the mindset and the vision. Industry blogs and magazines like Techcrunch, Mashable, WIRE, and Fast Company, Inc. will give you insight into the latest innovations and forecasts, and listening to broadcasts from sources like NPR can help you integrate theory and practice for maximum results.

Peer to Peer

Another great way to stay ahead of the trends is to form a group of peers like a Mastermind Group where you can put your heads together and discuss what is new in technology. Find out what they are using to run their businesses better and share what has worked for you.

Seek Team Input

Speak to your team regularly regarding the tech you are using. Find out what is working well and what isn’t. Over time, like anything else, needs change and evolve so you want to ensure you are keeping your tech current. By giving your team a voice, you will recognize when you outgrow certain systems and learn of additional opportunities to streamline your processes.

What to Consider Before Adopting New Tech

While it would be nice to scale up your business on the back of all free apps and software, the reality is that some tech costs money. Fees can add up quickly and endanger a business rather than help. Evaluate whether a fee-based service will alleviate your identified pain points and help you organize, streamline and provide operational efficiency and collaboration. If it will, the fees may prove worth their value.

Dramatic shifts in technology could be key to your next big steps as an event professional. Stay ahead of what’s new. You will soon be the tech leader in your market, enjoying the benefits of your position along with your newly adopted tech solutions.
