Our strategy with Be Sage Conference is pretty straight-forward: We create a list of questions that experienced wedding pros tend to have time and time again. One of the things we see as a struggle in the wedding industry is the challenge of growing a team that adequately reflects the founder’s creativity, skill, talent, and artistry.

KellyMarie_P_2013_0020When you bring on staff people to join your company, can they replicate the work you do?

We’ve invited the talented Kelly Marie Thompson to share how she’s been able to do this at her flower shop in Chicago. She is incredible at creating a culture within her team. And, we love how she has built systems and operations that her team can replicate, which are fundamental to managing the volume of sales at her Logan Square shop.

Here is a little more about Kelly Marie…

Kelly Marie Thompson has headed Fleur Inc since 2002. What began as a bucket flower shop has since turned into a bustling storefront boutique offering floral designs, deliveries and gifts, including as many American made lines as possible. The boutique has won a number awards including Chicago’s Best from both The Reader and Newcity Magazine. She and her work have been featured in many print magazines including Town and Country, Vogue, The Knot, CS Brides and The Knot Chicago, as well as online blogs including Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty, Elizabeth Anne Designs and Ruffled to name a few.

Creating beautiful floral designs for couples across Chicagoland, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan has been her focus the last few years, as well as offering design classes, pop ups and collaborating with colleagues on tutorials and styled shoots. Kelly Marie’s style has been described as “Organic & windswept, giving the illusion that floral design is effortless” and “Always elegant, but with a unexpected element that is sure to delight”. Her dream is to write a book on floral design, create her own line of floral design tools and one day open a wedding venue. She refers to her life as “boutique-ing and flowering!”

She currently lives in Chicago in a small home overlooking pine trees and a great view of the sky with her husband and their two cats. They spend their free time cooking, antiquing around the midwest and laughing together, celebrating the simple things in life.
