First of all, I just have to share Jaimi Brooks’ twitter bio with you:

“We’re a boutique on-site beauty and spa service getting LA relaxed and gorgeous one lipstick, bobbi pin, massage, and polish at a time.”

I don’t know about you, but that sounds completely and utterly divine.  Just the thought of it makes me more relaxed.  While Jaimi was in college, she started working as a manicurist and soon became a favorite of celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey.  From there she began working as a stylist for magazine fashion shoots.  In 2007, she officially launched Fiore Beauty, a full-service mobile spa service devoted to creating the ultimate beauty experience for every client, every time.   Jaimi and her team travel to their clients to make them pampered and lovely and beautiful.  Ahhhh, Jaimi… sounds heavenly!

Why did you start your business?

I had been working in the beauty industry for 8 years while getting my education in clinical psychology. I had more success than I anticipated was possible in the beauty industry working on advertising campaigns, print work, and in many celebrity homes. I had seen the very best in beauty being provided during these years.

I got engaged towards the end of my schooling, was planning my wedding which was an estate wedding in Palm Springs. I wanted for myself what I had been providing and seen being provided for my clients which was top-quality beauty and spa services on-location tailored for a sophisticated, modern, discerning client with an emphasis in customer service. I didn’t see a option like this available to brides and wanted to make it easily accessible for them to find. I had the background and the desire to create this and was excited to provide these on-location services with exceptional artists that are always professional, accommodating, friendly, and who appreciate the special day that it is for our clients and honor her experience in all ways. I love running and growing Fiore, working with my talented artists, our brides, and with all the amazing people in the wedding industry.

What book do you recommend to new business owners? Why?

“Pitch Like a Girl” by Ronna Litchenberg. In the beginning it was hard for me to learn to “sell” Fiore in a way that did Fiore justice. I of course think we provide an amazing service that people are really happy to have but I was shy, unsure, and awkward about telling people what our value is and why they should choose us. This book really helped me to do this in a way that felt authentic to me. It was a fun read too, the author has a great voice.

Do you have any cool goal-setting tips to share with us?

I like to sit down with my calendar and to-do list at the beginning of each month week to prioritize my projects (its funny that there always seems to be “projects” to be done in addition to work as usual) and schedule, allocate my time accordingly, delegate certain items, and weed out the unimportant stuff. When I do this I really get things really get done. If I don’t, then I spend my time frenzied, feeling behind, and paying attention to whats in front of me instead of whats most important. This also helps me have a work/life balance.

What do you find to be the biggest challenge as a business owner?

As Fiore grows there are more and more things to do and it’s hard for me not try to do everything myself. I have to remind myself all the time to delegate to my fantastic assistant and that other people will do a great job too. Being the boss to a team of people is tricky at times too. Oh, and I still don’t have a business plan, so looks like Ill be at The Simple Plan!

If you were starting your business all over again, what would you have done differently?

I wish I would have talked to other business owners way more!!! I would have saved so much time, money, and frustration if I had. I did so many simple things backwards because I just didn’t know who to ask. The support, feedback, ideas, and resources I get from other business owners in invaluable to me, not to mention so much fun!

Thanks Jaimi!
